NYC Expands Pizza Box Trash Cans to Combat Rat Infestation

Environmental enthusiasts and rat-haters alike have a reason to celebrate as NYC Parks extends its innovative pizza-specific trash cans to six additional locations across the city. This expansion follows the successful trial of the first pizza box receptacle installed in May, aimed at reducing trash overflow and deterring the city’s notorious rat population.

The Central Park Conservancy has reported positive results from the initial trial, highlighting reduced instances of jammed trash bins, decreased surrounding litter, and increased recycling of cardboard. “The early results show less jammed trash bins and surrounding litter, plus more recycled cardboard,” said Margaret Asaro, vice president for Park Maintenance and Facilities.

The red-and-white design of these trash cans is a nod to the checkered tablecloths iconic to NYC pizza shops, blending functionality with a touch of local culture.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by Mayor Eric Adams’ administration to control the rat population in New York City, a mission the mayor personally endorses. “New Yorkers may not know this about me — but I hate rats, and I’m confident most of our city’s residents do as well,” Mayor Adams remarked while announcing the upcoming National Rat Summit.

The pizza box trash cans are now available in several locations, including Loreto Playground in the Bronx, Saratoga Park in Brooklyn, Father Demo Square in Manhattan, Sobelsohn Playground in Queens, and Jennifer’s Playground in Staten Island.
