Every dog owner, I believe, considers their furry companions to be members of their family. They make certain that they feel joyful, cherished, and—above all—healthy.
Pet parents will go to unthinkable lengths to determine the true cause of their fur baby’s problems when they detect something is off.
Christian Pautsch made the decision to take his puppy, Bonnie, to the veterinarian after noticing that she wasn’t acting like herself.
A Visit To The Vet
Bonnie was in her heat cycle when Pautsch saved her from the streets, so he had to postpone her neutering appointment. He therefore believed that his cute border collie might be pregnant after noticing that she was acting strangely.
He guessed this since he also owned another dog, Heinz, a German shepherd and Australian shepherd mix, whom he made every effort to keep away from this lovely female until she had the surgery.
Following a comprehensive medical evaluation, the veterinarians concluded that Bonnie was experiencing a phantom pregnancy.
A phantom pregnancy, also known as a false pregnancy, occurs when a puppy exhibits maternal behavior and pregnancy symptoms even if they are not truly pregnant.
These symptoms typically include nesting, restlessness, decreased appetite, vomiting, and fluid retention.Additionally, some pups might start exhibiting symptoms of fake labor. Treatment is usually not required because the symptoms normally go away in 14 to 21 days.
Wrong Diagnosis
Putting his trust in the veterinarian, Pautsch brought his puppy home to wait for the symptoms to go away on their own.
But after only a few days, Bonnie gave birth to a litter of eleven healthy and gorgeous puppies, surprising her owner.
She went into labor in the middle of the night two days after the veterinarian arrived. Until every puppy arrived, my wife, Stefani Jacoby, stayed up with her the entire night. All of them are doing well. According to him in an interview, “We have been helping Bonnie feed them since the beginning, and now they are a really happy and chaotic bunch of pups.”
Perhaps he wasn’t as successful as he believed at keeping the pups apart, Pautsch joked.
However, Pautsch was impressed by Bonnie’s parenting skills and was thrilled that Heinz also stepped in to assist.
In the present day, a few puppies have already found a caring home, but the furry parents are still searching for potential homes for the remaining members of the litter.
Importantly, Pautsch did not criticize the veterinarian for this minor misunderstanding because he did point out that the veterinarian specializes in horses. How could he? He has never seen anything as adorable as the small puppies!
