Two young pupils are allegedly abused by a local educator.

Police say that on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, shortly after 4:30 p.m., a school administrator from Thacher Elementary School, which is located at 160 James St. in Attleboro, called the Attleboro Police Department to report that a staff member had reportedly assaulted several pupils.

According to the preliminary inquiry, several employees of the school saw Susan Martin, 57, a certified special education classroom teacher, physically abuse pupils at least twice that day.

Around 11:55 a.m., Martin allegedly smacked one 5-year-old student in the face, and at around 1:00 p.m., Martin allegedly pushed and slapped another 5-year-old student. Autism Spectrum Disorder has been identified in both victims.

Both events took place in a classroom and were observed by multiple other staff members.

Investigators discovered that the initial incident was reported to school officials three hours before it was reported to the police, between 1:00 and 1:30 PM. After the first event was reported, school administrators started talking to additional staff members, which led to the discovery of the second occurrence.

Investigators discovered that a few hours before Martin called the police to report the event, school officials had put him on administrative leave and requested him to leave the school.

The investigation’s Attleboro Police Detectives then obtained an arrest warrant for Martin on two charges of assault and violence against an individual with an intellectual handicap from the Attleboro District Court.

Investigators discovered that she had taken a prearranged vacation to Florida, which prevented her from being arrested right away when the warrant was issued.

Martin was apprehended without incident after Attleboro Police Detectives found her at her Kingston, Massachusetts, home on Monday, December 9, 2024. She was taken to Attleboro District Court for arraignment after being taken to the Attleboro Police station for detention.

Investigations into several aspects of this incident are still ongoing.
