Anyone from advertisers to government officials can be considered “buyers” of this information. The catch is that you might not even realize which applications are actively monitoring your every move.
These three applications may be selling your data or tracking your whereabouts, so experts recommend removing them.
Dating Apps
Many details about you are collected by dating apps. Location, interests (hi, advertising!), and more are all known to them. The whereabouts of app users have been revealed to the media in certain cases.
For example, a gay Catholic priest was discovered frequenting gay bars when his app, Grindr, shared his location with news organizations. You should use caution when providing personal information to dating apps, as they may not always be reliable.
Facebook and TikTok
TikTok records everything you copy and paste, and Facebook is a nightmare for privacy because it shares user data with advertising, third-party apps, and business partners.
It even can disclose your location and other data to law enforcement and any of its subsidiaries. Keep in mind that it owns several subsidiaries, including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Threads.
Food Delivery Apps
Apps that deliver food, such as Seamless, Caviar, Grubhub, and Uber Eats, all have different policies about how they will use your data, including your location. Reading the small print before signing up for a service is crucial, though, because you never know what you might find out.
For instance, Caviar is quite upfront about sharing customer data with other parties and service providers to complete food and delivery orders. Even though Grubhub says it will share your personal information with other parties, it won’t collect and sell your data.

While it’s true that not all applications are shady about selling your data and exposing your location, it’s still helpful to know which ones are more lax. To safeguard yourself, adjust the app’s permissions settings wherever possible; if that doesn’t work, remove the program.
