Lindsay Lohan, the iconic star of the original Mean Girls, expressed being very hurt and disappointed by a particular joke in the newly released remake of the cult classic.

The remake, led by Tina Fey and featuring Angourie Rice as the new student Cady Heron, includes a cameo appearance by rapper Megan Thee Stallion, who comments on Cady’s Christmas-themed talent show outfit, saying, “Y2K fire crotch is back.”

This refers to a disparaging epithet that music manager Brandon Davis used to characterize Lindsay Lohan in a 2006 paparazzi film. A representative for the 37-year-old actress stated with that Lohan was extremely affected by the reference in the film.

Despite this, Lohan herself makes a brief appearance as the moderator for Cady’s Mathletes competition, a moment that Rice, the new Cady, described as meaning a lot to her.

The Mean Girls remake, released in US cinemas on January 12, has faced mixed reactions from audiences.

While it triumphed at the box office with an impressive $33 million during its opening weekend, critics remain divided. Paramount’s president of global marketing, Marc Weinstock, revealed that the decision not to market the film as a musical was deliberate.

Weinstock stated, “We didn’t want to run out and say it’s a musical because people tend to treat musicals differently. This movie is a broad comedy with music. Yes, it could be considered a musical, but it appeals to a larger audience.”

Despite the box office success, critics have noted that much of the cast struggled to replicate the comedic timing of the original film’s stars, and the musical numbers seemed constrained by a tight budget.

The film, which is currently in US cinemas, is set to be released in UK cinemas on January 17. As audiences continue to weigh in, it remains to be seen whether the remake will capture the hearts of fans as effectively as the 2004 comedy classic.
