US District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan and former President Donald Trump sparred in a heated courtroom on Wednesday on the debt owed to author E. Jean Carroll due to slander.

The trial centers around Carroll’s allegations that Trump raped her in 1996, a claim he vehemently denies.

The atmosphere in the courtroom reached its highest point of tension when Judge Kaplan sternly cautioned Donald Trump, expressing a firm warning that he might face exclusion from the trial if he persisted in disruptive behavior.

The judge’s rebuke came in response to complaints from Carroll’s lawyer that Trump had disregarded court orders to lower his voice and had made audible comments to jurors, characterizing the trial as a witch hunt and a con job.

Trump’s courtroom behavior included insinuations that Carroll was dishonest about her assault, suggesting she had conveniently gotten her memory back. Earlier in the day, the former president had questioned Carroll’s credibility and motives for coming forward with the allegations.

The current legal battle follows a previous trial in May, where a jury ruled that Trump had sexually abused and defamed Carroll but did not find sufficient evidence to support her claim of rape.

Carroll received an order requiring Trump, who was not present at the trial, to reimburse her $5 million. Carroll is currently seeking an increase in compensation in order to obtain $10 million in compensatory damages in addition to further punitive penalties.

The trial has become a focal point for Trump, who has utilized legal challenges to boost his standing in the GOP presidential primary. During his fraud trial in New York, Trump capitalized on the platform, delivering frequent stump speeches and fundraising off his courtroom presence.

As the legal battle intensifies, Trump’s clash with the judge adds another layer of drama to the high-profile case.

With the former president recently claiming victory in the Iowa caucuses and leading in national polls, the courtroom clash could play a significant role in shaping public perception and political outcomes in the coming weeks.
