Cybersecdn– A national call for moral revival, known as the Poor People’s Campaign, reached the Florida Capitol as part of a series of marches held across 31 states. Led by James Morris and Linda Taylor, the Florida chapter of the Poor People’s Campaign highlighted the struggles of low-wage workers and families living below the poverty line.
According to recent data, the economic disparity in Florida is stark, with approximately 47% of the state’s population categorized as poor or low-income. This figure, representing nearly 9.8 million residents, underscores the pressing need for policy changes to address systemic issues such as poverty, racism, and ecological devastation.
During the protest, speakers emphasized the urgency of raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour, a demand echoed by many workers who struggle to make ends meet on current wages. Despite Florida having a minimum wage of $15 per hour, some residents continue to be paid less, exacerbating financial hardships for countless individuals and families.
In addition to advocating for fair wages, the Poor People’s Campaign addressed the broader impact of policies related to healthcare, education, and housing. The lack of affordable housing options has led to overcrowded homeless shelters and increased housing insecurity for low-income families across the state.
Speakers at the event shared personal stories of resilience and perseverance in the face of poverty, highlighting the need for systemic reforms to address the root causes of economic inequality.
