A Georgia Committee Will Soon Go After Prosecutors, and Republican Lawmakers Are Keeping a Close Eye on Fani Willis!
Cybersecdn– A committee set up by Georgia’s mostly Republican lawmakers with the power to fire and discipline prosecutors could soon throw out a criminal case against Donald Trump. The state’s Republican Governor Brian Kemp is going to sign off on a bill that takes away some restrictions from the Prosecuting Attorneys Qualifications Commission, which he made a law last year.
Republicans have been going after Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and her case against the former president and more than a dozen of his friends who are being charged under the state’s anti-racketeering law for plotting a “criminal enterprise” to change the results of the 2020 election in the state.
But GOP lawmakers have said that the committee wasn’t made to go after Ms. Willis, who was elected in 2020 and has been Fulton County’s chief prosecutor since January 2021.
When Mr. Kemp made the commission last year, he said it would go after “far-left prosecutors” who are “making our communities less safe.” In October, Mr. Kemp said, “I am not going to stand idly by while rogue or incompetent prosecutors refuse to uphold the law.” “We are making it clear that we will not risk public safety so that prosecutors can let criminals off the hook.”
But Republican lawmakers are also looking into claims of prosecutorial misconduct in the case against Mr. Trump. This week, a state Senate committee will hear testimony from defense attorney Ashleigh Merchant, who first brought up claims that Ms. Willis hired a lead prosecutor with whom she was romantically involved and then used his state-funded job to make money.
The group that is still waiting for Mr. Kemp’s final approval will soon be able to fire elected prosecutors that it thinks have broken the law or done something wrong.
Similar efforts to limit the freedom of elected “progressive” prosecutors are happening in other states as well. For example, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis removed two elected prosecutors, and Republicans in Pennsylvania impeached Philadelphia’s district attorney.
Congress Republicans are also paying close attention to Ms. Willis. The head of the House Judiciary Committee, Jim Jordan, has asked for records about how her office spent government funds, and US Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has said she will file an ethics complaint against the Fulton County prosecutor.
Tuesday on the Georgia House floor, House Democratic Whip Sam Park called the new bill a “partisan attempt to control and discipline prosecutors who make decisions that Republican politicians do not like.”

“It will be used to hurt the ongoing criminal case against President Donald Trump, who has been removed from office twice,” he said. If the judge in charge of the case decides that the accusations are true, Ms. Willis and her office could be kicked out of the case against Mr. Trump. In the next few days, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee is likely to make a ruling. The lawyers for the defense are also asking two other witnesses to give more information.
