The idea that animals are emotionless is one of the most pervasive myths that consistently crushes my heart.
It has become commonplace for me to encounter someone who claims that our animal companions are purely instinctive and cannot experience love, sorrow, or happiness.
However, I have witnessed cats purring in their owners’ laps, dogs leaping when they are enthusiastic, and even birds soaring into their two-legged companions’ hands.
I present you a narrative of pain and defiance that will warm even the hardest heart in an effort to show these people that they are mistaken. This is a difficult one, so get your Kleenex ready.
Push On Through
An animal rescuer from Pups Without Borders named Eve chose to pick up a soon-to-be mother from a nearby shelter after learning about it and gave her the most amazing and carefree pregnancy ever.
She saw that the puppy, now named Grace, wasn’t feeling well when she lifted her up, though.
When we took her to the veterinarian, they weren’t entirely sure what was wrong, but they speculated that it might be that she was simply becoming larger due to her huge litter, Eve told GeoBeats.
At first, the rescuer intended to keep Grace until she gave birth before transferring her to a foster home that was anxious to take in the mother and her cute baby.
Regretfully, things didn’t work out as planned. In the end, Grace lost all of the puppies.
Grace’s PCR sample had already been sent to our veterinarian. As a precaution, we do that for all of our dogs, but especially for pregnant or mother dogs. As it turned out, Grace had canine herpes virus. It’s normally asymptomatic and causes no problems for older dogs, but it’s usually 100% lethal for puppies younger than three weeks, she said.
The rescue crew as a whole was heartbroken. It hurt everyone’s hearts to see Grace so depressed, knowing that she would never get to see her puppies grow up to be large, content canines.
The rescuer tried to divert Grace’s attention from this terrible incident by giving her lots of walks, food, and cuddles, but nothing seemed to work.
Until they got a call that made all the difference!
Miracles Do Happen
In order to find someone to care for a litter of orphaned puppies, a non-profit group reached out to the rescue.
All eleven puppies refused to eat a single bite after losing their mother. Eve got the greatest idea as soon as she heard this. She thought it would be worth a try to introduce herself, as Grace still had milk.
We all agreed that it was the pups’ best shot. When they arrived at 11 p.m., I hurried over as quickly as I could, put them in a crate, picked them up, and drove them home. When I opened the kennel, she began to sniff, wag her tail, and kiss them before attempting to crawl inside, she said.
Grace was nursing the utterly famished pups while lying on the floor in a matter of seconds.
This amazing mother cared after these puppies as if they were her own for the following few weeks. They were quickly accepted into devoted households because they were large, robust, and utterly adorable as children.
Eve realized that Grace would be the ideal addition to her rescue family after witnessing her amazing surrogate motherhood.She adopted her, of course!
