Cybersecdn– On National Transit Worker Appreciation Day, MTA management took the opportunity to recognize and celebrate the invaluable contributions of transit workers in keeping the tri-state region’s transportation network operational. Front-line workers, including conductors, operators, station agents, and cleaners, were honored for their unwavering dedication and tireless efforts to ensure the smooth functioning of the transit system.
Among the transit workers recognized was Daniel Ribeiro, a Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) signal inspector, who emphasized the pivotal role of transit workers as the backbone of the community. Ribeiro’s sentiments were echoed by numerous other transit employees who expressed pride in their work despite the myriad challenges they face daily.
Courtney Williams, a conductor with 21 years of experience on the No. 7 line, was joined by the president of NYC Transit during his shift. Williams, like many of his colleagues, spoke candidly about the challenges of working in a high-pressure environment, where they often encounter verbal abuse, physical assaults, and other safety hazards. Despite these obstacles, Williams reaffirmed his commitment to providing passengers with safe and reliable transportation services.
MTA Chairman Janno Lieber also actively participated in the day’s events, rolling up his sleeves to work alongside transit workers in stations and engaging in meaningful conversations with agents and cleaners. Chairman Lieber emphasized the importance of acknowledging the contributions of all MTA employees, from front-line staff to behind-the-scenes personnel, whose collective efforts are essential for maintaining the efficiency and integrity of the transit system.

Amidst expressions of gratitude and camaraderie, concerns were raised about the safety and well-being of transit workers, particularly in light of recent incidents of assault and violence. The Transport Workers Union highlighted an alarming increase in assaults on transit workers, citing a disturbing incident in which a conductor was slashed in the neck. In response to these safety concerns, efforts have been intensified to enhance security measures, including the deployment of additional police officers, the implementation of mental health response teams, and the installation of surveillance cameras on all cars and platforms.
Despite the challenges they face, transit workers remain steadfast in their commitment to their roles as essential workers, ensuring that millions of people can travel safely and efficiently each day. Their dedication, resilience, and unwavering professionalism deserve not only recognition but also tangible support from the community and policymakers alike.
