Charges expected after southeastern Massachusetts crash leaves vehicle in lake, 3 hospitalized
This week, a collision in Massachusetts left a car in a lake and other people injured.
Authorities say that at around 11:45 p.m. on Thursday, an Oak Bluffs police officer parked near Our Market heard a loud bang that he thought was coming from a car accident. When the officer arrived on the scene, he saw a car overturned in Sunset Lake and a broken telephone pole. The officer asked Oak Bluffs Fire/EMS staff and other officers for help.
The police found a 35-year-old man in the sea and a 31-year-old woman on the beach. The man’s feet were stuck beneath the car, and he was informing the police that his mother was unconscious and in the car’s water-soaked back compartment.
Officers arrived and jumped into the knee-deep water to help. The rear doors did not allow officers to reach the unconscious woman. Their attempts were hampered by the dense muck and almost cold conditions. After removing the air bags, officers got into the car.
The female was successfully freed by officers using the rear tailgate. After bringing her to shore, the officers noticed that she was not breathing and had no pulse. They started CPR and other life-saving techniques until OBFD/EMS personnel arrived to relieve them. The male passenger was freed by OBFD officers using the Jaws of Life.
The three residents were taken to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. The operator was identified as a 31-year-old woman who was slightly hurt. The male passenger, age 35, received treatment for minor wounds. As of Friday afternoon, both are still in the hospital at MV Hospital.
As of Friday afternoon, the 60-year-old woman, who is the mother of the operator and a male passenger, is still in critical condition after being airlifted to Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Officers then discovered that the driver and passengers were traveling in a 2023 BMW X5 M series SUV from an Edgartown business to a Tisbury residence. Officers have concluded that high speed and alcohol consumption were contributing factors based on the preliminary investigation.
No additional information was made public, and this is still an open inquiry. Criminal charges are expected to be brought against the operator.
