A Third Minnesotan has died after consuming cantaloupe contaminated with salmonella. The CDC has reported that 26 Minnesotans have been affected by the contaminated cantaloupe, compared to 302 cases nationally.
The outbreak has been linked to several brands of whole and pre-cut cantaloupes, including Malichita and Rudy brand whole cantaloupes, and pre-cut cantaloupe sold under brands including Aldi, Kwik Trip, Trader Joe’s, Freshness Guaranteed, RaceTrac, and Vinyard.
The Minnesota Department of Health is working with the state Department of Agriculture, the FDA, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to investigate the outbreak. Carlota Medus, supervisor for MDH’s foodborne diseases unit, said that they are still in the middle of the investigation trying to determine where people were exposed who became ill.
“Were they exposed by the initial cantaloupe that was contaminated, or were they exposed and ate cantaloupe that was not the recalled cantaloupe, or was a cross-contamination event or some other situation?”.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration first issued a national recall of some brands of whole and pre-cut cantaloupe on Nov. 9; that recall has since been expanded. The Minnesota Department of Health is urging consumers to not eat sliced cantaloupe in their homes if they are not able to tell if it’s a recalled product .
It is important to note that not everyone who eats the recalled cantaloupe will become ill, but if they develop symptoms, they should contact their healthcare provider.
In conclusion, the outbreak of salmonella from contaminated cantaloupe has caused several deaths and illnesses in Minnesota and across the United States. The Minnesota Department of Health is working with the state Department of Agriculture, the FDA, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to investigate the outbreak.
Consumers are urged to not eat sliced cantaloupe in their homes if they are not able to tell if it’s a recalled product. If you develop symptoms, please contact your healthcare provider immediately.
