The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is actively searching for Tyrell Lamonte Bailey, 27, after a tragic incident involving a discarded firearm led to the death of a police investigator. The situation unfolded on August 28, 2024, and highlights the grave consequences of handling firearms improperly.

Around 5:40 p.m., officers from MPD’s Robbery Suppression Unit were canvassing the 4500 block of Quarles Street NE when they observed Bailey exiting a suspicious vehicle. Upon attempting to make contact, Bailey fled, running towards southbound I-295 and jumping from a retaining wall. Observers saw him place a firearm in a storm drain before leaving on a motorcycle. Authorities have since identified and located the motorcycle driver involved.

During the investigation, MPD investigator Wayne David went to retrieve the gun from the storm drain. Unfortunately, as David handled the firearm, it discharged accidentally, striking him. He was transported to MedStar Washington Hospital Center but succumbed to his injuries.

Bailey, who is described as 5’6″ tall and weighing approximately 180 lbs, has tattoos covering his entire arms. He is wanted on a DC Superior Court arrest warrant for unlawful possession of a firearm.

In response to the severity of the situation, a substantial reward has been offered for information leading to Bailey’s arrest and conviction. MPD is offering up to $20,000, while the FBI, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the United States Marshals Service have collectively added $40,000 to the reward fund. The total reward amount now stands at $60,000, an increase from the previous $50,000.
