Cybersecdn– It sounds like something from a video game, but a deadly fungal disease that is not easily treated with medicine is spreading across the country. Texas seems to be one of the places most affected by it. If you have this fungus, which is called Candida Auris or C. auris, the CDC says it is a “serious global health threat.” The first case that was heard about was in 2015. From what the CDC says:
“Candida auris (C. auris) is a type of yeast that can cause severe illness and spread easily among patients in healthcare facilities. It is often resistant to antifungal treatments, which means that the medications that are designed to kill the fungus and stop infections do not work.”
This picture shows that Texas is one of the places that has been hit the hardest. Between 101 and 500 adults were infected with C. auris from January to December 2022. What’s good? People who are otherwise healthy are not at risk for this sickness.
The bad news? People who live in nursing homes, long-term care hospitals, and other healthcare centers are most likely to get the disease. People who already have serious health problems and need a lot of medical care are most likely to get C. auris. Patients with invasive medical devices like feeding or breathing tubes, catheters in a vein, or urine catheters are more likely to get C. auris and get an infection.
People who are healthy and don’t have these risk factors are not likely to get C. auris. This includes family members and people who work in healthcare. You can read more about this sickness that kills here.
The Leading Causes of Death in Texas
#10 Kidney Disease: The CDC says that kidney disease is the ninth most common reason people die in Texas. It was the cause of death for 4,513 people in Texas in 2021.
#9 Chronic Liver Disease/Cirrhosis: Cancer of the liver and cirrhosis is the ninth most common cause of death in Texas. As of 2021, they were to blame for 5,273 deaths in the state.
#8 Diabetes: Diabetes kills eight out of ten people in Texas. In 2021, 8,136 people died because of diabetes.
#7 Chronic Lower Respiratory Disease: Long-Term Lower Respiratory Disease is the seventh most common cause of death in Texas. 10,026 people will die from it in 2021.
#6 Alzheimer’s Disease: Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth most common cause of death. In 2021, it caused 10,437 deaths.
#5 Stroke: In Texas, strokes are the fifth most common cause of death. In 2021, 11,944 people died from strokes.
#4 Accidents: Four out of every ten deaths in Texas are caused by accidents. There are various types of accidents. Someone could die in a gun accident, a car crash, or a fall. In 2021, 14,704 people will die in accidents.
#3 Cancer: I didn’t expect cancer to be number three instead of number one. In 2021, cancer killed 42,552 people.
