CybersecdnKristelle A. Candelario (Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office) and Jailyn Candelario. A 32-year-old mother from Ohio is going to prison for a long time for killing her 16-month-old daughter while she was on vacation in Puerto Rico and leaving the child home alone to die of hunger and thirst.

Court records seen by Law&Crime show that Kristel A. Candelario officially pleaded guilty on Thursday to one count of aggravated murder and one count of endangering the life of a child in the death of Jailyn Candelario. When Candelario pleaded guilty to murder, the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office dropped other charges against him, such as two counts of murder and one count of felonious assault.

Court records show that Candelario could get up to 12 years in prison for child abuse and up to life in prison for murder if she pleads guilty. If Candelario is ever freed, she will have to go on probation for 18 to three years. The result was praised by prosecutors as a win for the victim in one of the worst cases the office had ever seen.

County Prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley said in a statement after the plea hearing, “This case is one of those truly unimaginable cases that will stick with me for many years to come.” As lawyers, it’s our job to speak up for victims. Today, we did so for 16-month-old Jailyn, who is no longer with us because her mother made selfish choices. For Jailyn, being found guilty today is the first step toward justice.

Law&Crime previously reported that around 8 a.m. on June 16, the Cleveland Police Department and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to a call about a dead baby in a home in the 3100 block of West 97th Street. The baby was later identified as Jailyn. It was the child’s mother who called, saying that she got home and found the baby not responding.

Investigators found no signs of trauma and ruled her dead. However, Jailyn was very thirsty. A bottom liner that was “saturated with urine and feces” was found in Jailyn’s Pack-n-Play bin by the cops.

Police say Candelario admitted that she left her child alone while she went on vacation for 10 days. From June 8 to June 16, “Candelario herself admitted,” she left Jailyn “at home, all alone and unattended,” while she was on vacation in Puerto Rico and Detroit, Michigan, according to the incident report.

The toddler’s body parts were sent to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office to be autopsied and looked at in more detail. The medical examiner found that “the child had been left alone and unattended for approximately 10 days and had subsequently died,” according to the authorities. On March 18, Candelario will be back in court to hear her sentence.
