Angela Maria Francisco, a 42-year-old illegal immigrant from Guatemala, has pleaded guilty to multiple charges related to identity theft and voting in U.S. elections. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Francisco began using the stolen identity of an American citizen in 2011 to secure a U.S. passport, which she used to travel to and from Guatemala on several occasions between 2012 and 2022.

In addition to obtaining a passport under false pretenses, Francisco also registered to vote in Alabama in 2016 and participated in the 2016 and 2020 primary and general elections. The Department of Justice noted that she continued using the stolen identity for years, applying for and receiving a renewed passport in 2021.

This case has drawn attention to the importance of election integrity. Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen emphasized that maintaining the integrity of elections is a top priority. “I have been very clear that a top priority of this Office is ensuring only eligible American citizens are voting in Alabama elections,” he said.
