Henry Center for Pre-Law Education are thrilled to announce the upcoming lecture by Carter Phillips, a distinguished Supreme Court and appellate lawyer. Phillips, currently a partner at Sidley Austin LLP in Washington, DC, will present his lecture titled “Witness to Democracy: A 40-Year Perspective on the Supreme Court” at Miami University’s Oxford campus.
With an illustrious career spanning decades, Carter Phillips stands as a beacon of legal expertise and insight into the workings of the nation’s highest court. A graduate of Ohio State University and Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, Phillips’s journey through the legal landscape has been marked by unparalleled achievements and contributions.
Phillips’s vast experience includes serving as a law clerk to Judge Robert Sprecher of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit, as well as to Justice Warren Burger of the United States Supreme Court. These formative experiences laid the groundwork for Phillips’s remarkable career, which has seen him argue an astonishing 90 cases before the Supreme Court and an additional 150 cases before the U.S. Courts of Appeals.
His lecture promises to offer invaluable insights gleaned from four decades of observing and participating in the legal intricacies of the Supreme Court. Attendees can expect to delve deep into the nuances of landmark cases, judicial trends, and the evolving role of the judiciary in shaping American democracy.
The Menard Family Center for Democracy, in collaboration with Miami University’s College of Arts and Science and College of Liberal Arts and Applied Science, is dedicated to fostering civic dialogue, engagement, and public understanding of democracy and civic affairs.
