SAN JOSE — A big building expected to become the start of a massive tech campus in San Jose that’s slated to sprout on the site of a long-shuttered retail outlet has won final approval from city officials.

Super Micro Computer has won approval from top city planners for a building that totals 333,400 square feet and would be the

first stage of what could eventually be a tech campus

where a Fry’s Electronics store once operated.

This initial structure would be a three-story warehouse and manufacturing building that would sprout at 550 East Brokaw Road in San Jose.

All of the plans that Super Micro has filed with city planners indicate that the shuttered Mayan-themed Fry’s consumer electronics store won’t be bulldozed.

Eventually, Super Micro aims to develop a tech campus totaling 3 million square feet.

The city planning documents specified some uses for the first building.

“The building will receive shipments of computer components such as motherboards, hard drives, memory cards, cases, and metal racks, where they will be stored for assembly on site,” according to documents on file with city planners.

Super Micro’s development of the new building is expected to be a job-creating endeavor.

“Approximately 50 employees will be on site at any given time,” a San Jose planning document states.

In February 2024,

Super Micro Computer bought the 19.7-acre property

for $80 million.

In October 2024, the

tech company filed plans to redevelop the site

at 550 East Brokaw.

The 19.7-acre site formerly accommodated a big Fry’s Electronics store and warehouse and the headquarters of the once-iconic but now-defunct consumer electronics retailer.

Founded in 1985 with a Sunnyvale store, Fry’s peaked in 2019 with 34 stores in 19 states.

In early 2021, Fry’s abruptly shut all of its stores and ceased operations in the wake of the economic disasters unleashed by the coronavirus outbreak and government-ordered shutdowns.

The Planning Department gave the initial building final approval on May 14.
