Michigan Heroic Dog and Quick-Thinking Cop Rescue Senior from Frozen Lake Plunge
An amazing ice rescue occurred on Michigan’s Arbutus Lake when a 65-year-old man fell through the icy surface and found himself in danger.
Quick-thinking and resourcefulness came to the forefront as Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Officer Kammeron Bennetts sprang into action, utilizing an innovative approach that involved the man’s loyal dog, Ruby.
Bystanders dialed 911 when they witnessed the man struggling in the icy waters with only his head and shoulders above the fragile ice.
Officer Bennetts, equipped with a body camera, captured the entire rescue operation. His initial attempt involved tossing a rescue disc tethered to a rope to the stranded man, but when this proved unsuccessful, Bennetts had an unconventional idea.
“Send your pup here. Will she come to me?” he urgently shouted to the man. In response, the man called his dog, Ruby, who enthusiastically bounded toward Bennetts.
Innovative Michigan Canine Aid
The law enforcement officer demonstrated cleverness by resourcefully attaching the rescue disc to Ruby’s collar. He then directed the individual to retrieve the disc from his loyal canine companion.
With the disc in hand, the man was directed to kick his legs and bring his feet to the surface. Bennetts skillfully pulled on the rope, steadily dragging the man onto safer ice near the lake’s edge.
Assisted by a local firefighter, the rescue was successfully completed with Ruby still connected to the rope. Following the ordeal, the man was transported to a hospital for treatment and later released.
The Michigan State Police commended the rescue effort on various social media platforms, specifically highlighting and expressing appreciation for Ruby’s indispensable contribution to the successful operation.
The tweet emphasized the officer’s creative thinking and teamwork, expressing admiration for the canine companion, stating, “What a good girl!!! Amazing ice rescue from 7th District, MCO Bennetts. Creative thinking helped save a life!! EXCELLENT JOB MCO Bennetts and RUBY!!”
