After a pedestrian was hurt in Fall River on Thursday, the neighborhood is hoping for changes.

Shortly after 12:30 p.m., dispatch received a call regarding a collision between a car and a pedestrian at North Main and Weaver Streets.

The Fall River Reporter received two statements from local residents expressing their unhappiness with the situation.

According to the first,

A truck turning left from Weaver Street onto N. Main Street struck a pedestrian yesterday; the victim is presently in the trauma unit at St. Luke’s Hospital with many fractured bones, a punctured lung, and broken ribs. This man was let off by a city bus at the bus stop. There isn’t a crosswalk until you reach Roger’s Hot Dogs, and if you’re heading toward Shaw’s, you have to cross two highways on ramps and one highway off ramp. Who places a bus stop on a freeway side street when there isn’t a crossing for those individuals? AIM HIGHER! There are folks driving over the 25 mph speed limit. When we have kids, we are terrified when we try to get in and out of our automobiles because they have to get in and out on the street. Due to fast and reckless driving, we have lost innumerable mirrors on cars in the area, including two parked cars that were damaged. With only one crosswalk in place to cross Weaver Street since its inception, the situation has gotten even more absurd. Linda Perreira has received numerous complaints about this, which is unacceptable, but she has taken no action. Since there are no crosswalks, we must risk our lives by crossing the street between parked cars where oncoming traffic cannot see us. This is dangerous and must be fixed right now.

The following was stated in the second statement:

Since I’ve been here, we’ve had three individuals hit—possibly more. A few parked cars were totaled, while several more cars were side swiped. Nothing has been done by the mayor to improve safety in this region. There isn’t a crosswalk for miles. Roger’s Hot Dogs is the nearest one to cross. To cross, we need a signal that turns red to stop traffic. Something!

Early on Friday afternoon, the Fall River Reporter sent an email to Councilor Pereira asking for confirmation of the account, but they haven’t heard back yet.
