New England Wildlife Center in the process of rescuing animals impacted by Massachusetts oil spill

The New England Wildlife Center responded to an oil leak in the Muddy River in Boston on Sunday evening. Unknown amounts of what is thought to be heating oil were dumped into the river, affecting local wildlife.

In collaboration with the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, NEWC has successfully captured the most severely affected waterfowl to date and transported them to their hospital for triage and treatment.

According to NEWC, its staff put in extra hours on Sunday night to take in, stabilize, and treat the Canada geese and ducks.

Their top priorities are to open airways, remove oil from the lips and eyes, and support them with heat to help them make up for it. When they are stable enough to go through the process, they will start the washing.

In order to complete the rescue attempt and place the remaining animals in care, NEWC will return to the location early on Monday morning.

They are requesting that people refrain from approaching or attempting to catch any wildlife in this region in the meanwhile! They are under a lot of stress, and both people and dogs could get hurt if they come into touch with the oil. Since many of the surviving birds can still fly, they don’t want to hurt them any more or drive them away.
