New York State Police are investigating an incident involving up to 40 people who harassed a state trooper in Wappingers Falls. The group, seen in an online video, surrounded the trooper on Route 9D, stole his hat, and attempted to steal his cruiser.

The trooper had responded Sunday afternoon to reports of erratic driving by dirt bikers and motorcyclists near Village Hall. The video shows the group continuing to drive on sidewalks and yards, shouting profanities and revving engines as they harassed the trooper.

Lt. Charles Harkleroad, of the New York State Bureau of Investigation, said the investigation is ongoing, particularly in identifying those involved. For more information, visit News 12 Long Island’s coverage.

Locals, including painting contractor Matthew Guagliardo, noted that such reckless behavior by bikers is common in nearby areas like Poughkeepsie and Hyde Park. “It seems like it’s overwhelming for the cops because there are so many of them,” Guagliardo said.

During a press conference on Monday, state officials, including Sen. Rob Rolison, called for stronger measures to allow police to pursue reckless drivers.
