Scott Lockard was just heading to work at the Oklahoma Humane Society on a typical day when he noticed a black bag tied to the center’s entrance doorknob.

There was a little brown puppy inside the luggage when the man checked it. However, Scott told The Dodo that this was nothing new to him:

He got to know her a little after adopting the puppy. She was a bitchy and quiet dog, but she was in excellent health overall.

There was a message in the bag when Scott opened it to see if the person who had left her had left anything.

“Her name is Maris; find her a good home,” the note read.

Seeing this note makes me depressed since it seems like the person who left him had good intentions and only wanted someone to help the dog since they were unable to.

A Growing Problem

In any case, the humane society decided to take action regarding the dogs at the institution, so they shared a statement and a photo of Maris.

“We didn’t post the photo to specifically call out the people who left the pet, but rather to bring attention to a greater problem facing our community,” Roshelle Anderson, marketing manager for the Oklahoma Humane Society, told The Dodo.

Adoptions are currently a major issue at the facility because there aren’t enough pets being adopted despite the growing number of dogs that are abandoned. This indicates that housing them all would be quite expensive for the shelter.

The facility asks anyone who is able to assist in adopting a dog and bringing him to his new home.

Maris is still waiting for someone to come get her at the time this story was written, but I have no doubt that someone will take her in because she is so endearing and likeable.
