Rescuers Heard Tiny Cries Coming From Flooded Marsh, What They Found Broke Their Heart

A rescuer’s work is not only challenging, but it also never seems to end.

They are inundated with rescue cases every day that require rapid attention. The best part is that they always do it with a smile on their faces.

Animal rescue is so much more than just a profession. They get so much excitement and happiness from helping an animal in need that they can’t wait to do it again.

This sentiment is well-known to Peggy Harrell, director of the shelter and co-founder of the Animal Rescue Fund (ARF) of Mississippi.

Rescue Mission

Harrell’s phone rang one rainy day to tell her about a small fur ball who had gotten herself into a difficult predicament.

The small critter was trapped in the marshy area directly above a stormwater pond at a Byram, Mississippi, apartment complex.

The kitten was [on] a spreading vine and grass bog. Pippa Jackson, the other cofounder of ARF, told The Dodo that the kitty had discovered a braided maze of roots in the center of the floating bog.

They were aware that this small animal’s weight and size were the only reasons she hadn’t fallen into the surging river.

A woman named Kelly Collins, one of the volunteers, hurried to the pond to save this cute infant. However, upon arriving, she recognized that this rescue effort would not be straightforward.

According to Jackson, Kelly was terrified that she would send the kitten running and then drown it since she was so unsure of slipping through the bog.

New Plan Of Action

Collins did some research and discovered that the animal was, in fact, a kitten. Unfortunately, she had to return to the shelter because she was unable to approach her. However, the Mississippi shelter realized they couldn’t give up despite this small setback.

“With the water running through the storm drain, snakes, and [the kitten] becoming weak and cold and just giving in to the weather, we knew the kitten had little chance of survival overnight,” Jackson wrote in a Facebook post.

Jackson formed a rescue group, which consisted of inmates from Central Mississippi Correctional Facility.

She began screaming for our assistance. We started searching for her, attempting to determine her precise location and how to approach her without getting waist deep in the icy water, Jackson wrote.

Fortunately, the water was not too deep as several of the rescuers jumped in right away. Still, this rescue was definitely one ofthe wettest and muddiest the shelter has ever seen.

You simply aren’t living right if you have never been to an apartment complex in the rain with fourteen striped inmates splashing around in a pond. We had quite an audience across the street trying to figure out what this posse was doing, slip sliding around the pond, in the weeds and calling out in kitten speak,Jackson wrote.

One of the rescuers saw an opportunity to save the kitten as it was scurrying the vines and roots. She was safe at last.

The kitten, now named Marsha, was immediately given a much-needed bath as well as a head-to-tail medical examination.

Marsha is very loving and enjoys being held and cuddled. She is also partial to hamburgers!Jackson said.

Home Sweet Home

A month after her nerve-wracking rescue mission, Marsha blossomed into the sweetest kitty everwho eagerly awaits for a family to sweep her off her paws.
