Speeding Ticket Turns Into Life-Changing Career Advice for Alabama Woman

An Alabama woman, Alacia Rutledge, received life-changing advice when she was pulled over for speeding by State Trooper Ben Brown in August 2022. Struggling with a dead-end job and financial hardships, Rutledge admitted to Brown that she couldn’t afford the ticket. Instead of issuing a citation, Brown offered something more valuable—career guidance.

During their 10 to 15-minute conversation, Brown suggested that Rutledge consider a career in nursing, writing on her warning slip, “Promise me you’ll go to scrub or nursing school, and slow down, and I won’t give you a ticket.”

Rutledge took his words to heart. She enrolled in a two-year surgical technology program at Bevill State Community College in Jasper, Alabama. Last month, she graduated and now works as a surgical technician at the University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital. For more details about this inspiring story, visit CBS News.
