NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Severe thunderstorms are set to impact Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky late Sunday into early Monday, marking the third consecutive weekend with storm threats in the region.

According to the latest update from the Storm Prediction Center, the “Enhanced Risk” category of severe weather has been expanded to cover a larger portion of Middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky. This risk will persist through the evening hours of Sunday, continuing into the early hours of Monday morning. This severe weather threat is significant, and it’s possible that it could become even more intense in the next 24 hours.

The storms could bring a range of dangerous conditions. The most severe thunderstorms have the potential to generate wind gusts exceeding 70 mph, hail as large as golf balls, and possibly tornadoes. The Storm Prediction Center has even raised concerns about the potential for strong tornadoes, with possible ratings of EF-2 or higher on the Enhanced Fujita scale.

One of the main reasons this storm system is especially concerning is that it will strike during the nighttime hours, when many people are asleep. The storms are expected to begin affecting western counties around 9 p.m. and continue through to the early morning, affecting eastern counties by sunrise. For the latest forecast model data, residents are urged to keep an eye on weather updates.

Given that these storms will occur overnight, it is crucial for residents to have a reliable way to receive weather alerts, including severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings. The WKRN Weather Authority app is highly recommended to stay informed and prepared.

Although the immediate focus is on Sunday night’s storm, it’s important to be aware that another round of severe weather may be possible as soon as Wednesday. The situation will continue to evolve, and more updates will be shared as needed.
