A routine Saturday evening took a frightening turn when a 16-year-old girl was arrested after accidentally shooting a one-year-old boy. The incident, which occurred on August 31, 2024, led to a swift police response and significant concern for the young victim’s well-being.
The situation began around 7:47 p.m. when officers responded to reports of a shooting involving a child at South Bluff Park. However, upon arriving at the park, police learned that the shooting had actually taken place at a residence on Howard Street. By the time officers reached the correct location, the injured one-year-old boy had already been transported to a local hospital. Fortunately, his injuries were non-life-threatening.
The investigation revealed that the 16-year-old girl had been handling a handgun in a bedroom when it accidentally discharged, hitting the one-year-old. While the bullet did not cause life-threatening harm, the incident was alarming and led to the teenager’s arrest. She faces charges of injury to a child with a weapon and has been booked at the Nueces County Juvenile Justice Center. The handgun involved in the incident was recovered by police.
The young boy is expected to make a full recovery, but the psychological and emotional impact on those involved will likely be long-lasting. The incident underscores the critical importance of firearm safety, particularly in homes with children.
