Fay Jones, a disciple of Frank Lloyd Wright, this non-denominational chapel was commissioned by Jim Reed, a retired teacher with a vision of creating a tranquil sanctuary amidst nature.
Drawing inspiration from the Gothic marvel of Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, renowned for its majestic stained glass, Thorncrown Chapel harmoniously blends traditional and modern elements. The chapel’s name itself pays homage to historical and religious symbolism, referencing the Crown of Thorns associated with Christ.
The structure’s awe-inspiring dimensions – 48 feet in height, 24 feet in width, and 60 feet in length – are adorned with a staggering 425 windows, encompassing over 6,000 square feet of glass. This transparent expanse seamlessly integrates the chapel with the surrounding forest, creating a mesmerizing interplay of light and shadow that evokes a sense of divine presence.
E. Fay Jones’ commitment to preserving the natural setting is evident in the construction process, where materials were sized to be carried by hand through the forest. The use of local resources such as flagstone and Southernwood reflects the chapel’s deep connection to northwest Arkansas’ landscape.
Thorncrown Chapel is not only an architectural masterpiece but also a fully functional space, air-conditioned and capable of accommodating 100 guests. Open for visitation from March through December, it offers a welcoming and inclusive environment for contemplation and spiritual renewal.
