The Spirit Lake Reservation in North Dakota faced food shortages this summer due to delayed deliveries from the USDA Food Distribution Program.
The program, which serves over 50,000 people living on reservations, experienced disruptions after switching from two distributors to one earlier this year.
Tribal leaders, including Mary Greene-Trottier, had expressed concerns about the change, but felt their voices were not heard.
Lawmakers, including Sen. John Hoeven, have since pushed the USDA to take action. The agency has responded by increasing food assistance and signing a temporary contract with a second distributor. For more detailed coverage on this issue, visit Yahoo News.

Greene-Trottier reported that deliveries have resumed, but long-term solutions are being pursued through bipartisan legislation that would give tribes more control over food distribution.
