We’ve finished the Huntington Beach Sectionals. Again, Luka Mijatovic stole the show in the last session when he broke his national record in the 1000 meters for 13–14-year-olds. He came in second place overall, behind Luke Ellis, who set a new best time and meet record by more than 12 seconds (8:45.19).
One more Sandpiper, Joshua Brown, finished third in 8:50.67 and broke the 9:00 barrier for the first time. In 8:51.54, Gabriel Manteufel swam the fastest out of the early heats and finished fourth overall. It was a big personal best and the #5 time for 15–16-year-old boys.
Katie Grimes ended her weekend by breaking three meet marks. A best time of 1:50.56 seconds helped her win the 200-yard backstroke event. That beat Bella Sims’s meet record of 1:51.69 from 2021 when she was on the Sandpiper team.
The next two events Grimes was back in the water and won the 200 IM (1:56.44). That was slower than her best time of 1:55.33, but it was still faster than Ella Eastin’s record from 2014 (1:56.78).
Within the 400-meter free relay, Grimes (49.79), Rebecca Diaconescu (48.82), Applejean Gwinn (51.65), and Claire Weinstein (50.29), together clocked 3:20.55, beating Novaquatics’ previous record of 3:21.14 set in 2003.
The group beat everyone else by more than 3.5 seconds. Before the break, Diaconescu (49.03) and Weinstein (49.17) went 1-2 in the 100-meter free. After Grimes, Diaconescu came in second in the 200-yard backstroke (1:55.74), and Gwinn came in second in the 200-meter individual medley (2:00.70).
