Following a reported altercation with police this week, a Cape Cod man is being charged with multiple offenses.

Falmouth Police officers stopped a car for speeding on Homestead Lane on Monday just after 8:45 p.m., according to the police. Officers determined that the motorist was Falmouth resident Elijah Williams, 28, during the encounter. Officers were speaking with Williams when they noticed drug paraphernalia inside the car. Williams refused to comply with cops’ repeated orders to get out of the car so they could search him. Williams turned the car into drive and sped off from the scene onto Maravista Avenue as police tried to open the door.

Williams’ car was seen speeding on Maravista Avenue by a local enforcement unit. The police tried to stop it, but owing to public safety concerns, the pursuit was stopped after the vehicle passed Teaticket Elementary School at an estimated speed of about 80 mph.

Officers found the car wrecked in front of 178 Menauhant Road shortly after. Williams made an attempt to escape on foot but was apprehended and placed under arrest right thereafter.

After being taken into custody, Elijah Williams was charged with reckless driving, failing to stop for police, leaving the scene of property damage, speeding, failing to stop, violating marked lanes, and possessing a class B drug.

Later, he was released on his own recognizance.

The crash scene was analyzed by the Bureau of Criminal Identification at the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office.
