ALAMO TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 35-year-old driver from Chicago was arrested early Wednesday after leading a Kalamazoo County deputy on a dangerous wrong-way chase on US-131.
According to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office, the incident took place around 1 a.m. when a deputy noticed a vehicle driving north in the southbound lanes of US-131 near D Avenue. The officer quickly took action to prevent a potential accident.
Deputy Attempts to Stop the Wrong-Way Driver
The deputy, who was also traveling northbound on the highway, saw the vehicle heading in the opposite direction. Acting swiftly, the officer positioned their patrol car ahead of the suspect’s vehicle using an emergency turnaround.
Despite the deputy’s efforts to stop the driver, the suspect ignored the signals and continued to drive in the wrong direction. This reckless action put other motorists at serious risk, forcing law enforcement to escalate their response.
Road Spikes Deployed to Stop the Chase
As the suspect refused to stop, the police deployed road spikes to bring the chase to an end. The spikes successfully punctured two of the suspect’s tires, making it impossible for the vehicle to continue.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, was taken into custody without further incident. Thankfully, no one was injured during the pursuit, and the only property damage reported was to the suspect’s tires.
Suspect Faces Multiple Charges
Authorities confirmed that the driver was arrested on multiple charges, including driving under the influence (DUI) and possession of illegal drugs. The individual is currently being held at the Kalamazoo County Jail while awaiting arraignment.
Quick Police Action Prevents a Major Accident
Wrong-way driving incidents can be incredibly dangerous, often leading to head-on collisions that result in severe injuries or fatalities. The swift action taken by the Kalamazoo County deputy likely prevented a tragic accident from occurring.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident, and further details may be released after the suspect’s court appearance.
