Security guard ‘happy to be alive’ after suffering 5 bullet wounds in gunfight at Texas weed dispensary
In a harrowing incident at the Purple Dragon Cannabis Dispensary in San Antonio, Texas, security guard Jonah Duran found himself in a life-threatening situation when three armed men attempted to rob the establishment. Almost a week after being shot multiple times while bravely defending the dispensary, Duran, now on the road to recovery, expresses gratitude for still being alive.
The armed confrontation unfolded on a Monday night at 3 a.m. as Duran was on duty at the dispensary, which is owned by his cousin. The three armed assailants entered the premises, unaware that Duran was armed as well. A fierce exchange of gunfire ensued, leading two of the would-be robbers to flee the scene. Duran, however, was not unscathed, sustaining five gunshot wounds—three in the neck, one in the hand, and one in the leg.
Rushed to the hospital, Duran underwent immediate surgery to address the severe injuries. Despite the gravity of the situation, Duran’s resilience became evident as he showed signs of recovery, walking and speaking just days after the traumatic incident. Speaking to KENS News, Duran expressed his gratitude for being alive and being able to continue being a presence in the lives of his children.
“I’m just happy to be alive. I’m happy I’m still able to be around my kids,” said Duran, who has three children, including an 8-month-old.

Nancy Duran, Jonah’s mother, shared the emotional impact of the incident, highlighting the potential consequences her son’s children could have faced had the outcome been different. With Jonah losing his father at a young age, Nancy is acutely aware of the significance of a father figure in her grandchildren’s lives.
“I just pray to God people have learned a lesson from this,” Nancy said, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the broader implications for societal awareness.
One of the suspected robbers, also injured during the exchange of gunfire, was transported to the hospital in critical condition. While Nancy Duran seeks accountability for those responsible for her son’s ordeal, she extends her prayers even to the hospitalized assailant, expressing a hope that people draw a lesson from the incident.
A GoFundMe campaign, initiated to assist the Duran family with medical expenses, has already surpassed its $10,000 goal, reflecting the community’s support for the brave security guard and his family. The campaign continues to accept donations, emphasizing the financial strain that often accompanies such traumatic events.
The Purple Dragon Cannabis Dispensary incident not only highlights the risks faced by security professionals in their line of duty but also serves as a poignant reminder of the broader implications of crime on families and communities. As Jonah Duran continues his recovery journey, his story becomes a testament to resilience, community support, and the ongoing need for vigilance and security measures in businesses operating in potentially vulnerable environments.
