In a harrowing incident at the Purple Dragon Cannabis Dispensary in San Antonio, Texas, security guard Jonah Duran found himself in a life-threatening situation when three armed men attempted to rob the establishment. Almost a week after being shot multiple times while bravely defending the dispensary, Duran, now on the road to recovery, expresses gratitude for still being alive.

The armed confrontation unfolded on a Monday night at 3 a.m. as Duran was on duty at the dispensary, which is owned by his cousin. The three armed assailants entered the premises, unaware that Duran was armed as well. A fierce exchange of gunfire ensued, leading two of the would-be robbers to flee the scene. Duran, however, was not unscathed, sustaining five gunshot wounds—three in the neck, one in the hand, and one in the leg.

Rushed to the hospital, Duran underwent immediate surgery to address the severe injuries. Despite the gravity of the situation, Duran’s resilience became evident as he showed signs of recovery, walking and speaking just days after the traumatic incident. Speaking to KENS News, Duran expressed his gratitude for being alive and being able to continue being a presence in the lives of his children.

“I’m just happy to be alive. I’m happy I’m still able to be around my kids,” said Duran, who has three children, including an 8-month-old.
