In a recent announcement, the Navy revealed the dismissal of Capt. Geoffry Patterson, the commanding officer of the USS Georgia submarine’s blue crew. Rear Adm.
Thomas Buchanan, the commander of Submarine Group 10, relieved Patterson of command citing a loss of confidence in his ability to command.
DUI Arrest Raises Questions
While the Navy’s statement did not provide specific details on the reasons behind Patterson’s removal, it emphasized the service’s commitment to holding commanders accountable for upholding the highest standards of responsibility and leadership.
Interestingly, Patterson’s removal follows his arrest on January 9, as reported by the Camden County Sheriff’s Office in King’s Bay, Georgia, where the USS Georgia is homeported.
The charges include driving under the influence and improper lane change. Patterson was released on bond after a payment of over $1,800.
USS Georgia Leadership Change
Patterson assumed command of the submarine’s blue crew in May 2022. The USS Georgia, an Ohio-class guided-missile submarine, concluded its last deployment in September 2022 after over two years (790 days) of forward deployment.
Converted from an Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine, the USS Georgia is equipped to carry up to 154 Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles and conduct special operations missions.
The Navy operates guided-missile submarines with two sets of crews, blue and gold, allowing for strategic availability, reduced submarine requirements, and effective crew training. Capt. Christopher Osborn, the commanding officer of the USS Georgia gold crew, has assumed control of the submarine, and the Navy assures that there will be no impact on operations.
This incident highlights the Navy’s commitment to maintaining discipline and accountability within its ranks, even as it continues to fulfill its strategic and operational responsibilities.
As Capt. Osborn assumes control of the submarine, the Navy reassures that there will be no impact on operations. This transition exemplifies the adaptability of the Navy’s crew rotation system, ensuring a seamless shift in command and maintaining the continuity of the USS Georgia’s mission objectives.
While the specifics of Patterson’s removal remain undisclosed, the Navy’s emphasis on accountability sends a clear message regarding the non-negotiable standards expected from its commanders.
As the USS Georgia continues to play a crucial role in the nation’s defense, the Navy’s commitment to discipline stands as a pillar supporting its operational effectiveness and overall mission success.
