Cybersecdn- A domestic violence call in Brooklyn turned perilous for two NYPD officers who sustained gunshot wounds in a confrontation with a 39-year-old ex-convict, Melvin Butler. The incident, which took place in an apartment on Bergen Street, escalated when Butler resisted arrest.
The officers, responding to a call from a mother allegedly attacked by her son, found themselves in a violent struggle with Butler. According to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, body-worn camera footage captured the intense altercation, culminating in shots being fired and officers being wounded—one in the hand and the other in the thigh.
Butler, whose criminal record includes a 15-year imprisonment for attempted murder and a recent charge of domestic violence, was also injured in the incident. He was wearing an ankle monitor at the time of the shooting.
This episode adds to the increasing concerns about safety and the challenges faced by NYPD officers. Police Commissioner Edward Caban noted the experience of the wounded officers, with one having over nine years and the other over sixteen years of service.
