In the era of remote work, online education, and digital entertainment, a reliable internet connection has become indispensable.

However, financial barriers often hinder connectivity, prompting the government to introduce the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) as part of President Joe Biden’s infrastructure bill in November 2021.

Empowering Low-Income Families

Replacing the Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB), the ACP focuses on assisting low-income families affected by income loss during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Offering a $30 monthly subsidy for internet bills, households on Tribal lands receive an increased $75 subsidy. With over 22.5 million households enrolling by January 8, the program has demonstrated its substantial impact.

Despite its success, concerns arise regarding the program’s sustainability. A spokesperson for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) suggests potential expiration by May without additional funding from Congress.

Worries about availability for new enrollments have heightened since a recent FCC order states that new enrollments won’t be accepted after February 7, 2024.

Given these developments, eligible individuals and households must capitalize on the ACP’s benefits before potential expiration.

To assess eligibility and enroll, individuals have various pathways, including checking eligibility through government assistance programs like Lifeline, Federal Public Housing Assistance, Medicaid, and others. Households with incomes at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines also qualify.
