Cybersecdn– Commuters traversing the busy highways of I-405 and SR-167 are bracing for significant adjustments in toll rates, set to take effect on March 1. This decision comes as a response to mounting traffic congestion plaguing the express toll lanes, prompting the Washington State Transportation Commission to approve Phase 1 toll rate revisions. The overarching goal is to alleviate congestion by encouraging drivers to utilize general-purpose lanes, thereby enhancing overall traffic flow and reducing travel times for all commuters.
The revised toll rates mark a notable departure from previous pricing structures, signaling a substantial increase for many travelers. Notably, the minimum toll rate is slated to rise to $1, representing a 33% increase for I-405 and a 100% increase for SR-167. Furthermore, the maximum toll rate will surge to $15, reflecting a 50% increase for I-405 and a 67% increase for SR-167. These adjustments aim to strike a delicate balance between generating additional revenue and maintaining accessibility for commuters.
In addition to the toll rate alterations, the commission has extended evening tolling and peak hour High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) policies by one hour, extending until 8:00 p.m. Furthermore, toll-free weekends will be introduced on I-405, providing relief for travelers during these periods. Overnight, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., toll lanes will remain free of charge, further enhancing flexibility for late-night commuters.
These changes represent the first toll rate adjustments in nearly a decade, underscoring the urgency of addressing burgeoning congestion issues. The commission anticipates that these modifications will generate between $4.8 million to $8.3 million in additional revenue from March 2024 to June 2025. This infusion of funds is earmarked for funding essential improvements and maintenance within the I-405/SR 167 corridor, with a keen focus on mitigating congestion and enhancing overall transportation infrastructure.
