President Joe Biden Government Wants More Gun Sellers to Do Background Checks on Buyers!
Cybersecdn- In a significant move to enhance firearm regulation, the Biden administration has finalized a rule that will compel thousands of additional firearms dealers across the United States to conduct background checks on buyers, particularly at gun shows and other venues beyond traditional brick-and-mortar stores.
The rule addresses a longstanding loophole that has allowed unlicensed dealers to sell tens of thousands of guns annually without performing background checks to verify whether potential buyers are legally eligible to possess firearms. President Joe Biden emphasized the importance of this action, stating, “This is going to keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers and felons.”
Under the new regulation, any individual who sells firearms primarily for profit must obtain a federal license and conduct background checks, irrespective of whether the sales occur online, at gun shows, or in physical stores. Attorney General Merrick Garland clarified that this rule applies to a substantial number of dealers who have evaded licensing requirements by claiming they are not engaged in the business of firearm sales.
The administration’s initiative comes as part of a broader effort to combat gun violence nationwide. President Biden has made gun control a key priority, establishing the first-ever White House office of gun violence prevention and advocating for measures such as universal background checks and a ban on assault weapons.
The rule, which follows the passage of bipartisan legislation in response to tragic events like the Uvalde, Texas elementary school massacre, expands the definition of those considered “engaged in the business” of selling firearms. It is expected to impact over 20,000 dealers who have previously operated without licenses, thereby closing a significant regulatory gap.
According to data released by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), over 68,000 illegally trafficked firearms in the U.S. were traced back to unlicensed dealers over five years. These firearms were associated with nearly 370 shootings between 2017 and 2021, underscoring the urgency of closing regulatory loopholes.
While gun control advocates have lauded the new regulation as a crucial step towards universal background checks, it is likely to face opposition from gun rights activists. The National Shooting Sports Foundation, an industry trade group, has previously warned of legal challenges against ATF rule changes that they perceive as infringing on Second Amendment rights.
