A man from Bristol County is being held on bond after entering a not guilty plea to a number of charges.
Marion Police were called to Abels Way shortly before 1:15 p.m. on Friday after a resident reported that a guy had been observed taking a lawnmower from the home’s Ring doorbell and driving off in a white pickup truck.
Two Marion Police officers saw a car that fit that description on Mill Street (Route 6) close to the Marion Police Department a short while later.
The pickup truck sped off south on Front Street despite Sgt. Larry Savery’s best efforts to stop it. Because of safety concerns, Sgt. Savery halted his pursuit of the truck.
Following the collision at the Silvershell Beach parking lot, the pickup truck was subsequently inspected by police. The motorist made an effort to flee and was eventually identified as Seekonk resident Peter Soares, 56.
Soares raced for the water and was apprehended by Sgt. Savery and Sgt. Sean Day.
After being evaluated at a nearby hospital, Soares was discharged and taken to the Marion Police Department to be booked.
Police concluded after an investigation that Soares had broken into the house and a shed and taken more goods.
Breaking and entering during the day with intent to commit a felony, operating a motor vehicle without a license, failing to stop for police, operating a motor vehicle to endanger, speeding, violating marked lanes, and disorderly conduct were among the charges brought against Soares.
He entered a not guilty plea at his arraignment in Wareham District Court on Monday and was released on $2,000 cash bond.
On January 21, Soares is expected to appear in court for a pretrial hearing.
According to Marion Police Chief Richard Nighelli, officers were able to find the suspect’s car in this case because the homeowner promptly reported suspicious behavior on their camera, which ultimately resulted in an arrest. Responding cops’ prompt decision to refrain from pursuing at high speed in the middle of an already hazardous scenario is something I would want to commend. The homeowner and police’ actions produced the intended result without causing any injuries.
