Commander of USS Georgia Submarine Faces Arrest and Removal Over ‘Loss of Confidence

In a recent announcement, the Navy revealed the dismissal of Capt. Geoffry Patterson, the commanding officer of the USS Georgia submarine’s blue crew. Rear Adm. 

Thomas Buchanan, the commander of Submarine Group 10, relieved Patterson of command citing a loss of confidence in his ability to command.

DUI Arrest Raises Questions

While the Navy’s statement did not provide specific details on the reasons behind Patterson’s removal, it emphasized the service’s commitment to holding commanders accountable for upholding the highest standards of responsibility and leadership.

Interestingly, Patterson’s removal follows his arrest on January 9, as reported by the Camden County Sheriff’s Office in King’s Bay, Georgia, where the USS Georgia is homeported.

The charges include driving under the influence and improper lane change. Patterson was released on bond after a payment of over $1,800.

Patterson assumed command of the submarine’s blue crew in May 2022. The USS Georgia, an Ohio-class guided-missile submarine, concluded its last deployment in September 2022 after over two years (790 days) of forward deployment.

 Converted from an Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine, the USS Georgia is equipped to carry up to 154 Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles and conduct special operations missions.

The Navy operates guided-missile submarines with two sets of crews, blue and gold, allowing for strategic availability, reduced submarine requirements, and effective crew training. Capt. Christopher Osborn, the commanding officer of the USS Georgia gold crew, has assumed control of the submarine, and the Navy assures that there will be no impact on operations.
