One user expressed, “Elmo, I’m suffering from existential dread over here,” while another shared, “Every morning, I cannot wait to go back to sleep. Every Monday, I cannot wait for Friday to come. Every single day and every single week for life.”

Even celebrities joined the collective grievance-airing, with actor Rachel Zegler admitting she was “resisting the urge to tell Elmo that I am kinda sad.”

Despite the unexpected role thrust upon him, Elmo responded with empathy, stating, “Wow! Elmo is glad he asked! Elmo learned that it is important to ask a friend how they are doing. Elmo will check in again soon, friends! Elmo loves you.” Some, including singer-songwriter T-Pain, appreciated Elmo’s efforts in fostering empathy.

“That’s love, pull up any time bruh,” T-Pain wrote. “Check in on your people 🙏🏿”

However, amidst the outpouring of emotions directed at Elmo, some online users began to wonder if the furry character needed some love and support as well. One X user questioned, “Has anyone checked on you @elmo?”
