Cybersecdn- A federal appeals court has cleared the way for a new California gun law that bans people from carrying concealed firearms in most public places, including parks, playgrounds, churches, banks, and zoos. The law was slated to take effect on January 1, 2024, but was temporarily blocked by a district court’s decision. However, the recent ruling by the appeals court has lifted the block, allowing the law to go into effect.

According to Governor Gavin Newsom, “Californians overwhelmingly support efforts” to keep public places “safe and free from guns. The legislation is aimed at ensuring public safety and reducing gun violence. The law prohibits the carrying of firearms in 26 locations, including parks and playgrounds, churches, banks, and zoos.

The ban also applies to college campuses, government and judicial buildings, medical facilities, public transit, public demonstrations and gatherings, athletic and professional sporting facilities, public libraries, amusement parks, places of worship, polling places, gambling establishments, any place where alcohol is sold, and any other privately owned commercial establishment that is open to the public.

The law has faced opposition from gun rights groups, who have been aggressively fighting the laws, often winning initial rulings in their favor before heading to appeal. However, the recent ruling by the appeals court has upheld the law, stating that it is “consistent with the nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation”.

The law is expected to have a significant impact on public safety in California. According to a report by the Violence Policy Center, California has the strongest gun laws in the country and has the lowest gun death rate. The report also states that states with strong gun laws have lower rates of gun deaths.
