When a four-legged furball is in need, there aren’t many things a committed dog rescuer wouldn’t do. One of them is undoubtedly veteran Missouri rescuer Donna Lochmann!

Over the years, Donna has encountered numerous obstacles while assisting stray and abandoned dogs.

She has seen it all, from dogs being ruthlessly left on the streets to being stuck in the most terrible situations.

However, some things, like this forlorn dog family living in a run-down home, make even this good-hearted hero speechless.

They Struggled On A Pile Of Trash

Seeing a dog, let alone a whole family, struggle to survive in cruel circumstances is always distressing.

Donna and her team from Stay Rescue of St. Louis, Missouri, jumped right into action after receiving a report regarding a mother dog residing in an abandoned house.

We enter the foyer, which formerly housed a front door. A mother dog is glaring at us. In a YouTube video, SRSL stated, “She barks, exposing her ribs and spine, and flees out the back door.”

They were unaware of the house’s extreme disrepair at the time.

They spotted enormous heaps of garbage and decaying rubbish as soon as they got to the front entrance. There were nails all over the floor, so the team had to go slowly.

There was no light, but Donna could hear the sound of desperate shouts from the basement. The only issue was the almost-collapsing wooden staircase that led there!

However, that didn’t stop Donna from falling. She even fell through once, but she was able to cling to the wall and jump down into the dark basement.

And there it was—a very tragic scene!

Five little puppies were hiding in the corners, attempting to avoid strangers they had never met.

When Donna attempted to gently pick them up and place them in cartons, they remained motionless despite their apparent fear. The only issue was that their mother was missing. She refused to be rescued because she was so afraid of people.

But she hurried to the basement as soon as she heard her babies scream and whine. At that point, the team recognized her as an amazing mother!

Finally, The Rescue

Now that the puppies were safe, Donna and the other rescuers had only to make sure their mother was safe. Even though she was difficult to catch, they didn’t want to leave the area without her.

The team came up with a strategy with two backup volunteers.

They put a leash around the mother’s neck after cornering her. The team set up a big crate and passed it to one another till the exit because she couldn’t walk out on a leash by herself.

At last, the mother and her infants were securely placed into the vehicle and driven to the SRSL headquarters.

You re Safe Now

It was satisfying to see the mother—later called Mary Berry—reunited with her five children.

Mary was relieved to see her babies crawling up to her, finding the utmost comfort next to their mother, despite the fact that she was still somewhat disturbed.

Together with Mary, the puppies—named Stodgy, Shortbread, Sponge, Showstopper, and Soggy Bottom—will stay in foster care until they are prepared for adoption.

The family will spend some comfortable time away from that rubbish and dilapidated residence for the time being. Rather, they will get affection and some delectable food, giving them a taste of what life ought to be like.

All of these dogs will be paired with appropriate homes when the time is perfect and will surely become wonderful friends!
