Cybersecdn In the aftermath of the devastating events of September 11, 2001, countless heroes emerged, their bravery and selflessness shining brightly in the face of unimaginable tragedy. Among these heroes was retired New York State Trooper Steven A. Tyrrell, whose unwavering commitment to duty and service ultimately cost him his life.

Born and raised in Rochester, New York, Tyrrell felt a deep sense of duty to his community and country from a young age. After graduating from Monroe County High School, he pursued a career in law enforcement, joining the ranks of the New York State Police in October 1997.

Tyrrell’s career with the state police was marked by dedication, professionalism, and a steadfast commitment to upholding the rule of law. Over the years, he served with distinction in various capacities, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues and superiors alike.

However, it was Tyrrell’s response to the events of September 11, 2001, that would come to define his legacy. As news of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center spread, Tyrrell, like so many others, felt compelled to take action. Without hesitation, he volunteered to assist in the search and recovery efforts, deploying to New York City to join the ranks of first responders working tirelessly to sift through the rubble and provide aid to those in need.

For weeks, Tyrrell worked tirelessly alongside his fellow first responders, facing unimaginable conditions and unimaginable challenges as they worked to locate survivors and recover the remains of those lost in the attacks. Despite the physical and emotional toll of the work, Tyrrell remained steadfast in his resolve, driven by a sense of duty and a desire to make a difference in the lives of others.

Tragically, however, Tyrrell’s selfless service would exact a heavy toll on his health. In the years following his deployment to Ground Zero, he began to experience symptoms of a 9/11-related illness, a cruel legacy of his time spent in the toxic cloud of dust and debris that engulfed lower Manhattan in the days and weeks following the attacks.

On Wednesday, the 8th of February, Tyrrell’s long and courageous battle with his illness came to an end. Surrounded by loved ones, he passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of bravery, sacrifice, and service that will never be forgotten.
