A fresh wave of migration is unfolding in southern Mexico as a caravan of approximately 2,000 people, predominantly consisting of individuals on the move since Christmas Eve, embarks on a journey toward the US border.

These migrants—many of whom have young children—are steadfast in their pursuit of their destination despite difficulties they encounter along the way because they are dissatisfied with the Mexican government’s unfulfilled promises of transit visas.

Migrants Dispersed After Failed Promise of Travel Permits

The caravan took shape on Monday, with the majority of its members originating from Central America and the Caribbean. Discontent among the group stems from the unfulfilled assurances of transit visas promised by the Mexican government the previous week.

The migrants had initially dispersed, boarding buses to processing centers in the hope of obtaining travel permits, granting them and their families free passage through Mexico.

However, disillusionment set in as caravan leader Luis Villagran revealed that most migrants never received the promised permits. Expressing frustration, Rosa Vasquez, a Salvadoran migrant, stated, “We were waiting for two days for a response, and the third day immigration came… but they never gave a response.” Allegations of misinformation and an attempt to disperse the group have further fueled the migrants’ discontent.
