Cybersecdn- In a significant stride towards ensuring abortion rights in Florida, supporters of a proposed constitutional amendment are nearing the required threshold of petition signatures. As of the latest count, the Florida Division of Elections recorded 863,876 valid signatures, a steady increase from previous weeks.

The proposal, spearheaded by the political committee Floridians Protecting Freedom, needs at least 891,523 valid statewide signatures and sufficient representation across congressional districts to secure a place on the November 2024 ballot.

Florida Group Launches Initiative

With a deadline looming on February 1, the committee also awaits the Florida Supreme Court’s approval of the ballot’s wording. This initiative, launched in May, comes in response to a law enacted by the Republican-majority Legislature and Governor Ron DeSantis, potentially restricting abortions post-six weeks of pregnancy. This law hinges on the legal outcome of a 15-week abortion limit passed in 2022.
