Cybersecdn- In a significant environmental decision, Tanya Plibersek, the Environment Minister, has blocked the Victorian government’s ambitious plan to build a wind turbine assembly plant at the Port of Hastings. The decision comes in light of the potentially irreversible impact on the Western Port Ramsar wetland, an internationally recognized and ecologically critical area.

The project, pivotal for Victoria’s offshore wind industry, envisaged the dredging of up to 92 hectares and reclaiming 29 hectares of seabed of the wetland. The federal government’s proposal of six “high priority” offshore wind areas aligns with this vision, aiming to replace aging coal-fired power plants and reach net zero emissions by 2050.
